One of the first questions we get after someone makes the switch from a plastic shower puff to a natural sea sponge is:
How do I actually look after this thing?
The good news is, not much.
Natural sea sponges don't need complicated cleaning routines or harsh disinfectants. In fact, treating them too aggressively is one of the quickest ways to shorten their life.
A good rinse, somewhere to dry properly and the occasional deeper refresh is really all they need.
Here's how we care for ours.
How to clean your natural sea sponge after every use
The most important part of caring for your sponge happens in the few seconds after your shower.
1. Rinse it thoroughly
Hold your sponge under clean running water and gently squeeze it several times to flush out any remaining soap, body wash or cleanser.
You want the water running through the sponge rather than product being left sitting inside its pores.
2. Gently squeeze out the water
Give it a few gentle squeezes to remove excess water.
Don't twist or wring it out like a face washer.
Natural sea sponges have an intricate fibre structure and aggressive wringing can gradually damage it.
Think squeeze, not strangle.
3. Let it air dry
This is the big one.
Your sponge needs good airflow between uses. Leave it somewhere it can drain and dry rather than sitting on the shower floor, submerged in water or sealed inside a container while damp.
That's it.
Rinse. Squeeze. Dry.
Where should you store a natural sea sponge?
You don't need a complicated storage system, but your sponge will appreciate somewhere it can breathe.
A draining sponge dish, open shower shelf or hanging cotton cord can all work well.
Try to avoid leaving your sponge:
- Sitting in a puddle of water
- Inside a wet shower caddy with no drainage
- Sealed in a container while damp
- Permanently submerged in bath water
If you're travelling, let your sponge dry before putting it into its travel pouch wherever possible.
Airflow is your sponge's friend.
How do you deep clean a natural sea sponge?
Every so often, you can give your sponge a deeper refresh with bicarbonate of soda.
There's no need to stick to a rigid cleaning schedule. If your sponge is rinsed well and allowed to dry properly after each use, simply give it a deeper clean whenever you feel it needs a refresh.
Add approximately one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda to a bowl of warm water and allow it to dissolve.
Soak your sponge for around 5–10 minutes, gently squeezing the water through it a few times.
Rinse thoroughly under clean water, gently squeeze out the excess and leave it somewhere with good airflow to dry completely.
Simple.
And considerably less dramatic than putting it through the washing machine.
A coastal care tip
Lucky enough to live near the coast?
Take your sponge back to the sea for a natural refresh.
Give it a good soak in clean seawater and gently squeeze the water through it a few times. It's a beautifully simple way to freshen your sponge, and rather fitting considering that's where it began.
Just remember to rinse it with fresh water when you get home to remove any sand or sea matter, then gently squeeze and leave it to air dry.
Basically, a little Mediterranean reset for your sponge.
Can you boil a natural sea sponge?
No.
Please don't boil your sponge.
Extremely hot water can damage its natural structure and shorten its life. Warm water is plenty.
Your sponge survived the Mediterranean. It doesn't need to survive a saucepan.
Can you use bleach on a natural sea sponge?
We don't recommend using bleach or harsh chemical cleaners on your Aqua Zoi sponge.
The same goes for strong disinfectants. They can damage the sponge's natural fibres and aren't necessary for normal everyday care.
A thorough rinse, proper drying and an occasional bicarbonate of soda refresh are all we recommend.
Can you put a natural sea sponge in the washing machine?
Interestingly, yes, but it's not our preferred method for everyday care.
While sourcing our sponges in Greece, we were told by a local Cretan woman that natural sea sponges can occasionally be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle, with the sponges washed on their own.
It's a wonderfully Greek piece of sponge wisdom, but for regular care we prefer to keep things simple: rinse thoroughly, gently squeeze and air dry, with an occasional bicarbonate of soda refresh when needed.
If you do try the traditional machine method, keep it gentle, wash the sponges alone and skip harsh detergents and high temperatures.
When in doubt, your sponge would rather be back in the sea than going for a spin.
Why don't natural sea sponges get smelly?
One of the lovely differences you'll notice when switching from a synthetic shower sponge is how fresh a natural sea sponge stays between uses.
Natural sea sponges have a naturally porous structure, allowing water to flow freely through thousands of tiny channels rather than becoming trapped inside. They're also naturally resistant to bacterial build-up, helping them stay fresh between washes.
The Luxe Honeycomb Sponge is particularly good at this. Its open honeycomb structure allows water to rinse through easily and helps it dry between uses.
Our firmer Wild Sea Sponges have a denser structure, so they benefit from a little more attention when rinsing and drying, but shouldn't develop the familiar musty smell you can get from synthetic bath sponges.
As always: rinse well, gently squeeze and let it breathe.
What about little pieces of shell or sand?
This can happen, particularly when your sponge is new.
Natural sea sponges aren't manufactured in a mould. They've come from the sea, so occasionally a tiny piece of shell, sand or other natural sea matter can remain tucked deep inside.
Before first use, soak your new sponge in warm water for a few minutes until it has completely softened and expanded.
Rinse it thoroughly and gently squeeze the water through it several times.
If you find a little piece of shell or sea matter later, simply remove it and rinse your sponge again.
It's part of buying something that grew in the sea rather than something that came out of a factory.
Can I trim my natural sea sponge?
Yes.
After months of use, you might notice a small worn or loose edge. You don't necessarily need to replace the whole sponge.
Once it's dry, carefully trim away the damaged section with clean scissors rather than pulling at it.
A little maintenance can help you get more life from your sponge.
How long does a natural sea sponge last?
This is where good care pays off.
An Aqua Zoi body sponge can typically last 6–12 months or longer, depending on the individual sponge, how frequently it's used and how well it's cared for.
Unlike a factory made product, every natural sponge is slightly different. Its shape and texture will also gradually change with use.
That's completely normal.
Your sponge may soften further, change shape slightly or eventually develop worn edges.
It doesn't have an expiry date stamped on the bottom. You're looking at its condition.
How do I know when it's time to replace my natural sea sponge?
A little wear doesn't mean your sponge is finished.
Eventually, though, you'll notice that its natural structure is beginning to break down.
It may be time to replace your sponge when:
- It's beginning to significantly disintegrate
- Large sections are breaking away
- Its structure has become very thin or weak
- It develops an odour that remains after properly cleaning and drying it
And when its bathing days are finally over, you're not throwing another plastic shower puff into landfill.
A natural sea sponge is biodegradable.
The natural sea sponge care routine
If you remember nothing else from this guide, remember these three things:
Rinse it. Gently squeeze it. Let it breathe.
That's genuinely most of it.
Your natural sea sponge doesn't need sterilising after every shower or a cupboard full of cleaning products.
Treat it gently, let it dry properly and give it an occasional refresh.
