From the Aegean to everyday self-care
How it began
We’re Melissa and Mark, a Pilates instructor and a chippy from Australia who never planned on starting a sponge business.
While visiting family in the Greek Islands, we were introduced to something unexpectedly simple: the centuries-old tradition of sea sponge diving. Melissa was gifted natural sea sponges by extended family and neighbours who are traditional divers who harvest sponges by hand from the Aegean Sea.
From the first use, it felt different. Softer. Calmer. More intuitive.
Not a “luxury ritual” just a better way to cleanse.
When we came home
Back in Australia, we tried to find more.
But all we could see were synthetic loofahs, harsh fibres, and plastic alternatives, products that didn’t feel good on skin or sit right with us long term.
So we looked deeper.
Through conversations with our Greek family and partners, late nights of research, and learning from generations of sponge divers, we discovered why natural sea sponges had been trusted for centuries: they’re gentle, durable, naturally antibacterial, and grown by the sea, not manufactured in factories.
Why Aqua Zoi exists
Aqua Zoi = Greek for Water Life, was created to bring these natural Mediterranean sea sponges to Australia in a way that fits modern life.
Not as a trend.
Not as a perfect routine.
But as everyday support.
Our sponges are hand-harvested in Greece, traditionally prepared, and packed with care in Australia, designed to simplify cleansing for face, body, baby, and home.
One sponge. Fewer decisions. A softer experience.
Better over time
We don’t believe in perfection in wellness or sustainability.
We believe in small, consistent choices that feel manageable.
Aqua Zoi sponges are:
💧 100% natural
♻️ Plastic-free and biodegradable
🌊 Harvested sustainably in Greece
🇦🇺 Packed with care in Australia
They last for months, reduce waste over time, and quietly support routines without asking more from you.
Where we’re going
We’re proud to share a tradition rooted in the Mediterranean, not as something exotic or aspirational, but as something practical, calming, and easy to keep.
Because care doesn’t need to be complicated to be meaningful.
And sometimes, the simplest habits are the ones that last.
