The story of the mati

Mati simply means "eye" in Greek. For thousands of years Greeks have believed that envy, or even a compliment given with the wrong heart, can bring bad luck. This is the evil eye. The blue mati is said to look straight back at it and keep its wearer safe.

Eyes were painted on drinking cups in ancient Greece, and the tradition has never really left.
